Since we have several older (and mostly toothless) horses here at Equine Recline, we thought we'd
mention our feeding program for those of you who are experiencing the challenges of feeding your
horse as he/she ages.

First off, despite their rather toothless state, we continue feeding them free choice hay, in our case
bermuda grass hay. They will often wad this up and spit it out, but it does provide them with some
entertainment and chewing time, which we believe is very important.

From there, we feed them plain bermuda and timothy pellets. We buy the
Mountain Sunrise brand
of pellets that have no binders, fillers, or additives in them. This makes them much easier to break
down. Depending on how well they can chew, they are either fed the pellets dry (Again the pellets
break down very easily, so even lacking in teeth our guys can chew them, they just slobber a lot!),
soaked, or a combination of both.

If they are still in need of weight they are then fed rice bran or beet pulp without molasses. We do
not believe in feeding sugars such as molasses to horses, so avoid it when at all possible. If we
cannot get beet pulp without molasses, then just before feeding it is rinsed in hot water until the
water runs clear.

This is not our complete feeding program. But just a basic diet that we start with for feeding our
older horses. They are given supplements as needed and tailored to each horse.
