Maverick is obviously feeling quite good. Yesterday he threw a complete temper tantrum when we closed the stall door before he could escape! He proceeded to back around his stall kicking, with both back feet, at the walls!
Care for the Horses is having a raffle to raise funds. The prize is one ton of hay (20 bales)! Tickets are $5. Contact Care for the Horses at 520-559-1697 to buy your tickets NOW. Drawing is Saturday June 21st at 2 pm.
We’re noticing some improvements in Maverick, though some of it is hard to pin point other than just a general feeling that he’s improving. Though what we are seeing is that he’s standing up more often, and for longer periods. He is also doing what we’ve always called camel stretches. This is where they place their front legs out in front of themselves then rock backwards and down. In addition, he’s been doing full body shakes after we hose him off. These are all encouraging signs and hopefully we’ll continue to see more.
We’d like to send out a huge thank you to the following people for their generousity.

Time sure does fly by lately whether we’re having fun or not!
We changed Maverick’s dosage protocol with his Chinese herb mixes. We had been giving him a lower dosage 3 x’s a day, but at the suggestion of For Love of the Horse we have changed it to a higher dosage 2x’s a day.
We have moved Maverick to one of the inside stalls so that he wouldn’t lay so far away from food and water, and also so he’d be in shade. We also got him a bale of straw as he’s been asking for some. He’s quite the happy camper now! I don’t know if it is the change in the dosage of the herbs, moving to a different place in the barn, or a combination of both but he is getting up more often and staying up more, as well as getting up to eat more often.
We had some visitors, Gwen, Ellie, and Sophie. Alf is shown here with Ellie and Sophie. If you remember they did a fundraiser for us a short time ago doing a lemonade stand and made over $30!
Welcome to June!
Maverick got his shoes reset. He did absolutely wonderful! Thanks to our farrier Ben Bahti for his wonderful work on Maverick!
We’d been told that eventually the right hoof would probably start dying off due to lack of proper circulation. We have been nervous about this and were afraid that he would not have healthy hoof underneath the dead sole of the hoof that needed trimmed off. Thank God he does though!
For the first time Maverick was able to stand unsupported other than the Dynasplint while having his right hoof trimmed. It has been a very long time since he has been able to support himself that well on his left leg. Remember his left leg is the one that had the original contracture in it. We had to put the prosthetic on his right leg in order to trim his left one, and he did excellent. Again he did not need us to support him.
Maverick has been sore from the trim and was a bit subdued for several days. He is back being his spunky, talkative self now.
Maverick is continuing to do very well. He is extremely talkative lately, nickering at us constantly. We just love it!
He did manage to pull of his right shoe, and took a small chunk of hoof with it. It doesn’t look too bad and hopefully it will be an easy repair once we get the farrier out here.
We’ve had to cut back the dosages on the herbs for Maverick, we hate doing it but we are going through them very fast and are not getting the donations necessary to keep him on the higher dosages. We would rather he continue getting them consistently, then to be on the higher dosages off and on.
Thanks to Dr. Ira Gluck of Catalina Chiropractic for his donation!
Maverick has been doing very good here lately. He’s been extremely cheerful and full of himself. We’re noticing him standing up for longer periods and his appetite is incredible. He’s also got about a 1/4 inch of new hoof growth that is looking very good. He loves his shoes and they are making a huge difference in him not wearing his hooves off.
Thanks to Max and Nancy P for their donation to help Maverick! Also thank you to Marjorie B for our new wheelbarrow!
Yesterday morning we went out to find Maverick had let himself into Alf’s pen. Alf was not happy, but Maverick was incredibly pleased with himself! He was extremely bright eyed and full of it. It took a bit of effort to get him out as he did not want to leave, he thought Alf’s pen would make a great new living space!
We did get rain for over an hour yesterday. Maverick took himself inside out of the rain and stood up for almost the entire time. He normally does not stand for so long unless he has a water tub to brace himself against.
Then last night he came in for dinner and then proceeded to harass Dreamsicle and threaten to steal her food, though he can’t actually get to it. But the fun seems to be in getting her all worked up.
We’ve been giving Alf some of the arthritis and hoof formulas we have for Maverick. Alf’s arthritis is really starting to improve. He has bony changes to his knees that are now shrinking. He was also out running around yesterday after the rain which he hasn’t done much of lately.
We also wanted to share a picture with you of a lemonade stand done to raise money on our behalf. Thank you Ellie and Sophie!
