Forever engraved upon my memory is the first time I saw
Athena. Her graceful neck arched, nostrils flared, gigantic
chocolate eyes sparkled with excitement, while sunlight
glinted off a silvery white coat, and her tail flagged out
behind her. She strutted around a turn out, screaming at
every horse that passed by. On that first glimpse, I could've
sworn she was a stallion. Between that and being named
after the Greek goddess of wisdom and war, I should've
know that life would never be peaceful again.

Playful, capricious, whimsical, quirky, intelligent, loyal,
aristocratic, all describe her; yet those words fall short of
truly being able to capture the essence of her. She adored
challenges, especially that of finding ways to escape!
Athena was the matriarch of our group. The one we'd owned the
longest. She's been the mascot for Equine Recline, having been
with us almost since the beginning of horse ownership and
through the ensuing years and subsequent horses. She's been our
encouragement and guide for the rescue and proudly watched
over it all.

For her courage, strength, playfulness, the laughter, joy, and
everything she taught and gave us, she will be greatly missed.
She was a mother, sister, friend, confidant, mentor, and guide.
Her legacy will last here through the lives she touched while alive
and the lives we will touch in the future because of her
inspiration. As she so touched our lives, we can only do the same
to pass that on.

Untying lead ropes and unlatching chains, gates, and latches were right up her alley. And watching for a
moment of inattention where she could push open an unlatched gate or gleefully bolt past an unsuspecting
person were highlights to her day.

She didn't trust easily, yet held a fierce loyalty to those around her, human or horse. She would do anything
asked of her, no matter the cost to her. And when she finally gave you that trust, her loyalty only increased.
